I began the on-going Illuminated series while conducting research for the Broken Laws pictures, coming across a posting of a purported literacy test used as a voter registration tool in the Jim Crow era of Louisiana, where my family is from. Because the questions were absurdly subjective and thus unanswerable, I conceived of an ornate rebuke; responses cloaked in the language of medieval illuminated manuscripts to heighten the nature of the many creative means of repression, with examples coming directly from French, German and English religious books, commissioned and paid for by the wealthy and literate.
