Paper comes first for me. It’s allure is obvious; it is lightweight, inexpensive and it easily imparts a balm to the psyche: the freedom to experiment. Mark-making is agency and the first forms to emerge for me were of the figure, the face. Later, the utility of ‘working out’ ideas took shape yet the pleasure remains; creation unencumbered by intellect feeds the soul.
